I also think that Derren's clothing was important. He is dressed much more formally than the guy he is speaking to, so the victim's subconscious assumes he is higher up in society and perhaps more intelligent. In other words, it probably wouldn't have worked if Derren was dressed like a tramp.Nice explanation.
