When i saw this as a child i never mentioned that he used the Soundtrack of "2010 - the year we make contact". I would think the shadow is a projection. The camera never turns around to show what's behind it. And David is of course under the stair who was moved away before his shadow projection looked like he's walking through the wall. But that's only a suggestion. This illusion is still awesome :)

to summarize David's inside those stairs at 2:24 and a double came through the box through a trap door. The fixed light in the box makes the illusion of moving into the wall. The assistants wheel the stairs to the other side and he comes in through another trap door.

he is in the upstairs. When he enter, the shadow is other man shadow while he enter in the upstairs. The focus light have blind zones that hide the change.In the other side he enter from upstairs.

I can think of two things:1) They are actually in a studio.2) They freezed it at 2:45 and 5:01 and the shadows is just an effect. He can stand at the same spot and the light can just move around to make it look like hes stepping into / emerging from the wall.Do I need to mention that the heartbeats are fake and that the audience is in on it? Pretty awesome though.
