#67 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Science & Technology - CanadaMrfixitrick spins up the Tesla CD Turbine II to see if it holds together under speed. Some great revving action with the sights and sounds of this CD Turbine at over 10,000 rpm. The Tesla CD turbine is a disc type turbine made from CD discs, CD spindle, a nozzle, neodymium magnets, and glue. The original Tesla Turbine was invented by the great inventor Nikola Tesla in the early 1900's.Tesla claimed his disc turbine design was his greatest invention, and believed it would, "...scrap all of the heat engines of the world."See my other Tesla Turbine videos and more at my Youtube channel: http://youtube.com/MrfixitRick... out my Tesla CD Turbine web site: http://www.cdturbine.com/CD_Tu... a look at the Tesla For President'08 tee-shirts!)For a video of this machine dressed up for Halloween and cuttin' a pumpkin, go to: http://www.howcast.com/videos/... check out my Instructables on building CD turbines to run on faucet water-pressure or air pressure: http://www.instructables.com/m... out my HowCast site: http://www.howcast.com/users/m... order magnets, go to http://www.cdturbine.com/CD_Tu... and click on the K&J Magnetics banner.

Just be sure to follow the safety requirements 'cause these little suckers can blow up at 15,000 rpm. You should have the unit in it's own enclosed steel or polycarbonate structure, and wear safety equipment (facemask, gloves, leathers, cup) besides. The water-powered version is much safer...but this air version is worth some risk just for the sound!!

SWEET IM GUNA TRY THIS :D

Uh, kids...please don't try this at home! These things can whip up to 30,000 rpm in a few seconds and explode with shot-gun force. If you must attempt to operate a Tesla CD Turbine on dangerous air pressure, I always recommend safety precautions. That means a metal enclosure around the machine, and protective safety equipment on the operator. The faucet-pressure versions of the CD Turbine are much more fun and safe...BTW, this CD Turbine ran cool inside... nothing melted!

Kids if ur gonna try this at home always remember to tell ur parents that ur going downstairs to burn a CD (technically thats not lying).

See my SinkScience series videos # 9, #10, and #13 for ways to produce power from faucet water pressure with the Tesla CD Turbine. You won't generate much power from faucet pressure... a couple of watts max.Serious household power would require a high-pressure water supply.

Hi! I'm watching all these turbines and wonder if there is more use to it then just spinning CDs? Could you maybe post some video where the turbine will be put to work - I mean producing electricity?I've also watched a lot of videos with Sterling engine but its all toys, no real use.Don't get me wrong, I just look for practical example of generating electricity for my house.

A portable compressor or CO2 pressure tank could also easily power the turbine for short intervals in a mobile situation.I can keep this turbine spinning at 500 rpm by blowing into it with lung power. There is not much torque in a Tesla Turbine, but they develop horsepower at high rpm and can be geared down to provide torque. See the Cornell University geared-down Tesla CD Turbine power a Lunar Rover platform up a test ramp and beat the other air motors!! YouTube/watch?v=FpbBVkP8__8

Nope, that's just the sound of this turbine revved up to about 10,000 rpm!

ok, are u using a saw in the background? cuz it sounds like ur cutting wood with a spoon
zbbt (September 14, 2008 at 8:52 pm)
these engines are horrible, you in no way could power something mobile. with the air it requires youd need a large compressor just to keep it spinning and at that there is no torque provided what so ever
