He has Down Syndrome, Aspberger's Syndrome is a part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is a separate disorder. A portion of the population with Down Syndrome has Autism, but this is not the case for Tom. Down Syndrome is caused by a third chromosome in the 23rd pair, whereas no one knows with certainty what causes Autism. Down Syndrome causes mild to severe mental retardation and carries potential health implications, as well, whereas the effects of Autism vary widely.
