its complicated unless you know the structure, but the center cube on each side is on a rivet and is able to rotate. the outer pieces are held in by these centers and are twisted because the centers are able to twist. But the centers, when all colors are alligned and is solved, the center can be twisted a different way than it originally was before it was scrambled. complicated

there is one solution that is that all colors are connected and that is how it is solved. but the centers of each side are able to be rotated 90 degres from how they originally were. The supercube, however, forces the centers to be twisted in the right direction for it to be solved
