Im wrong he did have a gun.I know Im just a narrowminded asshole. I read this book about 10 years ago and I found it interesting. I just think if you look at the situation and what he did it was a bit moronic and arrogant. I mean the kid is dead and why?. Well he ventured off into the wilderness that if you arent trained and disiplined you are going to die. The wilderness isnt a place for soul searching hippies to play poetry with. Its amazing a bear didnt eat him

McCandless's death is portrayed as being without regret. He freed himself from obligations of being a member of society, furthermore a bond and responsibility of being a family member. Kind of like Siddharta. He may have found his answers in his short lived life, but such selfish act leaves others in despair. Such is the irony of the movie. McCandless is unbound by the chains of materialism, community, and identity, however leaves behind those who knew, loved, and nurtured him in agony.

In the movie McCandless finds some kind of an answer before his last moments. He asks us, would any of us trade for anything (including one's family, one's identity, and all the anguish that followed when he was sick) had they seen what he sees right before his death. The answer obviously is a "No" in the movie, which noone will ever know in actuality. But I figure in the movie it is some kind of a metaphore similar to Nervana.
